Hillitä (Verb type5)


  1. (transitive) to restrain, curb, temper, moderate (to control or keep in check)
    hillitä itsensä ― to keep it together, forbear (to maintain composure; to avoid an overly emotional reaction; to suppress an instinct or urge; to control oneself when provoked)
    hillitä kielensä ― to curb one's tongue
    Hillitse kielesi lasten seurassa.
    Temper your language around children.
  2. (transitive + partitive) to rein in, check, bridle (to stop or slow something, by exercising control)
    Hallituksella ei ole muuta vaihtoehtoa kuin hillitä julkista kulutusta.

  3. (transitive + partitive, medicine) to obtund (to reduce the edge or effects of)
